How To Choose The Right Curtain Heading

Choosing which lining to use on your window dressing is an important decision which can transform the final look of your curtains. Made-to-measure curtains are a fantastic choice for achieving a transformative look to your home, but to truly optimize their performance you should consider the type of curtain lining that suits your needs.

Linings not only enhance the look and feel of your chosen curtain fabric, they are also your secret weapon to keeping your home warm and snug, which in turn helps to keep those energy bills low. Whether you are looking for more privacy, extra warmth or want to ensure you achieve a full ‘black out’ effect, there is a lining to suit your needs.

Choosing a lining for your curtains can seem like a daunting decision but it really doesn’t have to be complicated.  Take a look through our simple linings guide which explains the benefits of the different types of curtain linings available, or book your free consultation and let one of our team take you through the options.

What curtain heading is best?

Each curtain heading gives a different effect and each has its own impact on the overall decor of a room. There isn’t one “best heading” because different headings coordinate with the chosen style of the room.

Curtain heading styles control the fullness of the curtains and they can provide a traditional, formal look or something more relaxed or contemporary. It’s an important part of the design process, as your heading type will determine the style of your curtains and, along with your chosen fabric, make the most impact.

Option 1: Pencil Pleat

Pencil pleat curtains are so called because of their fabric folds, which are gathered together near the header to create what looks like a row of pencils. They have an understated, modern design that can give a refreshing new look to many interiors.

They can be used on tracks or poles, under pelmets and valances or on their own. Our made-to-measure pencil pleat curtains are suitable for most styles of fabric and for all curtain widths and room heights.
Option 2: Double Pleat Curtains

Also known as double pinch pleat curtains, a double pleat header is a good choice for patterned fabrics as less of the pattern is gathered into the fold. Pinch pleats give a more formal look than a pencil pleat and the curtains tend to hang beautifully in uniform folds. This heading looks best when hung beneath a curtain pole, however, can be used on a track.

Our made-to-measure double pinch pleat curtains work well for all types of windows and looks great in drawing rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and kitchens.
Option 3: Triple Pleat Curtains

Triple pinch pleat curtains are similar to a double pleat but have groups of 3 pleats separated by flat sections of fabric rather than 2 with a double pleat.  This makes the curtains fuller with a more luxurious look.

Very well suited to both modern and traditional homes, our made-to-measure triple pleat curtains are suitable for all curtain widths and room heights and most fabrics. This heading looks best when hung beneath a curtain pole, however it can also be used on a track.
Option 4: Wave Curtains

As an alternative to traditional curtain headings, the wave system offers a more contemporary, neat and stylish curtain look. The finished appearance of wave curtains is similar to that of eyelet curtains but the fabric hangs directly below the track in a neat and uniform style.

The ‘wave’ effect is created through combining a specially designed heading tape and wave glider-cord to create a soft and simple continuous wave effect. When opened the curtains stack back neatly and straight and when closed the fabric hangs in a smooth continuous wave effect.
Option 5: Eyelet Curtains

Our bespoke eyelet curtains create a simple and modern wave effect and are used with curtain poles (not suitable for curtain tracks).  Different sizes and colours of eyelets are available to fit 28mm, 35mm and 50mm curtain poles in a variety of colours.

The eyelet sizes we offer for our made-to-measure curtains have been optimised for these three main diameters of pole and are sized to enhance the ease of movement when opening and closing the curtains.
Option 6: Goblet Curtains

Our made-to-measure goblet pleat curtains are similar in their makeup to pinch pleat curtains but create a more formal traditional look.  Small goblet shaped sections of fabrics are formed in the curtain heading when the fabric is gathered and pleated, these are then separated by flat sections of fabric.

Pinch pleat curtain hooks are used at each goblet, so the curtains are suspended by the goblets with flat fabric between. This heading looks best when hung beneath a curtain pole, however it can be used on a track also.
